Do you mean that gettext isn't expected to be supported in openwrt? I can hardly
believe if is this possible due to a lot of open-source software out there
depending on gettext. Looks like the only way to achieve gettext-free build is
to provide openwrt-own stub gettext drop-in implementation which is a very hard
and complex task.

As for my problem with the broken software compilation due to ld not finding
libintl - looks like I had resolved it the same way it had been done for glib2
by defining TARGET_CFLAGS and TARGET_LDFLAGS in make file pointing to the actual
location of libiconv and libintl in the staging dir.
