You have to investigate why your 64-bits build system refuses to build a 32-bits app (see ./build_dir/grub-0.97/config.log). Depending on the distro you're using, you might need to install additional packages like gcc-multilib (Debian/Ubuntu) or gcc.i686 & libgcc.i686 (CentOS/Fedora/RHEL). I'm working on Prereq check to spot that before attempting to build...
