I don't really understand why you'r making all this so difficult for
yourself - why not simply install a complete OpenWrt system on your board?
If it is x86, it should be fairly standard with flash, harddrive or similar?
There should be a simple routine for restoring the original system?
Why not just build a new OpenWrt x86 image and install this on the board
(you should be able to restore fairly easy I would guess)?
Or, it should be possible to add an extra "drive" with OpenWrt on it and
use this as boot-media (change boot options in bootloader)?

Am I completely missing the point here?
