ok, some cut&paste:
Why OpenWRT and not FreeWRT or any other distro ?
* no integrated config system (freewrt uses different config file
formats for all services, openwrt uses one config system for all core
components - uci)
* no unified package metadata and dependency handling, lots of
redundancy. integrating a new package requires changing existing build
system files.
* very limited hardware support (only broadcom 47xx and routerboard 532)
no separation between generic and hardware specific kernel config options
* no parallel build support
* FreeWrt development ist driven by a company, most or all developers
are employees from Waldemar Brotkorb, if he stops, FreeWrt dies. OpenWrt
is split in several projects as there is the main OpenWrt project, a
Documentation project, X-Wrt dedicated for Webinterface development. see
also https://dev.openwrt.org/wiki/people

this reflects only some aspects of the thing, there are more reasons for
OpenWrt, the main thing is, OpenWrt ist just 5 years ahead in
development, apis, platform support, comunnity buildup, etc.
