Solved! As it so happened, I had always connected to my VPN server from other networks that had different subnet settings than my own.
I had always just used the default 192.168.1.1 at home (which I will change when I get home). The network I was trying to connect from, also used the same LAN settings, so there was some conflicts going on. Fortunately, I had access to this "away" network, and was just able to change it here, and able to access my LAN back home. I just had to make them different, setting 192.168.0.1 as for the network here, and all worked as expected.
