It used to "not work on a number of platforms"... in 2.4, it works for
IPv6 on all platforms, and for IPv4 on all but NetBSD - but in that case,
things will not work at all (so, breakage is obvious).
There is a small bit more overhead as extra messages need to be passed
back and forth to and from the kernel, but that should be negligible.
