Thanks for your analysis.  Indeed, this could explain the differences
between what you saw ("no issues") and what others are seeing, and how
to solve this.

I'll give the patch a closer look - and would appreciate a few more
testers that actually have seen the problem - and then it could go 
into 2.3 + git master.  So, "early ack" here :-)
