I see that so far, my question hasn't been widely popular. I will gladly
RTFM if my question appears silly, but sometimes a little nudge in the
right direction is much appreciated. It would be especially useful to us
to know whether the server is actually communicating with the client or
not and what those RW sequences represent:

In the meantime, we have figured out that the ISP over which the client
connects has made changes to its routers, possibly killing a working
firewall configuration. The ISP of course says they fixed the issue, but
I'm still seeing the same issue in our openvpn log.
