I found the following bugs in checkinstall package opened. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=717778 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkinstall/+bug/78455 There is also a temporary workaround Checkinstall has a configuration file /etc/checkinstallrc.
