With the help of a friend, I first needed to manually create a directory called
/usr/local/lib/openvpn

The errors have been resolved and I am able to compile, make and checkinstall
OpenVPN 2.3.7 using the source zip file.

Thanks David for your reply.

Well my knowledge of Debian is rudimentary.

Following your observation that I might not have permissions to create the
needed directories, I changed the way I sudo.

username@hostname:~$ sudo -i
[sudo] password for username:~$ [I keyed in the password]

(I am in the root directory, right? That means I have root permissions to
perform whatever I wish??)

root@hostname:~# cd /home/username/openvpn-2.3.7
root@hostname:/home/username/openvpn-2.3.7# ./configure

(a list of messages follows)

root@hostname:/home/username/openvpn-2.3.7# make

(a list of messages follows)

root@hostname:/home/username/openvpn-2.3.7# checkinstall

(a list of error messages as described in my earlier post.)

I would appreciate it if you could help me resolve the errors.

Regards.

Sebastian
