I'm not sure how to diagnose this. I don't have administrative access to the Openstack deployed in my university's cluster so I cannot tell if there is any kind of setting that would affect TCP-over-TCP traffic. As far as I know, the virtualization used is KVM, so I think being closer to the hardware than something like VMWare or Virtualbox would prevent such issues.
