Back in my pptpd days, we had to patch the Linux kernel to provide 
MPPE "encryption", so it was indeed quite a chore to get it all 
working properly. The only howtos available were for other distros 
(my job was to get it working on Slackware), and as is typical of 
most random web howtos, they were written by people who really did 
not understand what they were doing.

By the time we had ppp_mppe.ko in the mainline kernel, the excuses 
why we "had to use PPTP" were gone: no longer trying to pretend that
Win9x had a legitimate place in business use, and openvpn had true 
client/server mode ...

Yes, the kernel issue was by far the biggest obstacle in the path of 
pptpd deployment, so I suppose there could be truth to the "pptpd is 
easier" assertion. I cannot imagine why anyone would knowingly 
implement a broken protocol, however.
