it's possible for you to evaluate/discuss this 
(http://article.gmane.org/gmane.network.openvpn.devel/4994) patch?
I have briefly discussed it with Dazo some days ago and he gave it an ack.

I'll be on #openvpn-devel in case you need some clarifications or feedback 
about it's stability. 
BTW, I've been using the aforementioned patch on a couple of servers that 
collect hundreds of VPN clients with thousand of stations (i.e. layer 2 routes) 
each for 2 weeks without problems and with a consistent reduction of the load 
average.
