FWIW - I just solved this problem (I inherited the swift cluster referenced by Stephen).
We were running into a swift application connection limitation to memcache...not a memcache limitation, or linux socket limitation. Simply upping the "memcache_max_connections" config (from the default of 2) eliminated the issue. Bryan
