The diagram in this page should help visualize what is going on: http://wiki.openstack.org/XenXCPAndXenServer The easiest way I know to get started is to follow the DevStack instructions: http://wiki.openstack.org/XenServer/DevStack You can then more easily see how everything fits together. You can use XCP (iso or through kronos packages) or Citrix XenServer (free edition has all the features you will need to get started). See what fits your needs the best.
