Or if the OP is already redirecting / piping stdin in the cron job command 
line, something like this:

(cat input.txt; sleep 10) | openssl s_client ...

so that stdin remains open for a while after the actual input is exhausted. 
Maybe use that in conjunction with -ign_eof (shouldn't hurt, assuming the 
server closes its end of the connection when it's done).
