What kind of errors are you running into? And what version of Ubuntu
are you running?

Ubuntu & various other Linux distos don't match precisely the OpenSSL
release numbering format. They tend to patch the issue and then
release an update as say '1.0.1-4ubuntu5.16' which despite being
updated will likely still get the response '1.0.1a/b/c/etc' to the
terminal question 'openssl version'.

A simple 'sudo apt-get install openssl' should have you on the latest
version available. It may well still output 'openssl 0.9.8k' in the
terminal but it has been patched for the latest security vulns
announced by OpenSSL.
