Other groups -- CentOS and Ubuntu come to mind -- do that. Competition is not bad; it can be very fun. And if you (permanently) place the contenders' artwork somewhere online, they will all get something back. They will be able to say -- and show -- they were in this contest. That is really the best you can do for all participants IMHO.
