They are snapshots of the current CVS. When we make a release we take the current version of the relevant branch and (among other things) make a tarball from it. Since there have been no 1.1.0 or 1.0.2 releases yet these have not been widely tested and should be regarded as experimental and not for use in production environments. Since there has been a 1.0.1 release the 1.0.1 snapshots should be treated as near release quality.
