We are trying to build OpenSSL 0.9.8r on z/OS 1.10 system. We haven't built
Openssl on z/OS for a long time, and have rebuilt and environment to do it.

Configure is successful, but any use of make (depend, for example) fails with

FSUM7332 syntax error: got (, expecting Newline

Anyone have an insight? I've seen many references to this - It's a general
shell error, maybe related to .profile running in spawned shells or something...

Make depend example:
making depend in crypto...
make[1]: Entering directory `/u/dmclel/openssl/openssl-0.9.8r/crypto'
FSUM7332 syntax error: got (, expecting Newline
make[1]: *** [depend] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/u/dmclel/openssl/openssl-0.9.8r/crypto'
make: *** [depend] Error 1
DMCLEL3:/u/dmclel/openssl/openssl-0.9.8r: >

Make default targets gets the same error when trying to run c89.sh

Thanks for whatever hints anyone might have.
