in general, you do NOT want to be using source tarballs to replace/upgrade components of a package-managed distribution. SuSE Enterprise Linux 10 has their own upgrade management process, you really should stick with that unless there is an overwhelming reason to deviate, and if thats the case, you will want to package your updates as RPMs and carefully work out the interdependencies with the vendor supplied packages.
