In crypto/crypto.h, there's the macro definition for
FIPS_NON_FIPS_MD_Init
#define FIPS_NON_FIPS_MD_Init(alg) \
int alg##_Init(alg##_CTX *c)
So in case of MD5, it expands to MD5_Init(MD5_CTX *c) for the function
you found.
