Please, let's not digress. I apologize for even mentioning that part.
I believe the real reason kdelibs dlopens openssl is to perform some binary
compatibility check, which a standard dynamic link wouldn't ensure. If
that's the case, then I'd say you could just drop this check. Maybe openssl
had ABI issues in 1999, but I don't think it does anymore. However, it has
been almost a decade since this kdelibs code was written, so I might not be
remembering it right. :)

What I want to know atm is what is the purpose of the
SHLIB_VERSION_NUMBER define in opensslv.h? Is it supposed to match the
shlib sonames or not?
