My view comes from what is architecturally scalable by design which makes it recursive in nature. What I mean by this is that any IO layer that implements exactly those 3 modes would allow such IO layers to be stacked in one long pipe. And yes exactly; the whole point is to make the application end simple and to leave the complexity inside the library.
