Didn't know outlook did allow other digest algorithms: what does it allow? Outlook express doesn't AFAICS. You aren't forced to use SHA1 its just that SHA1 is the default and the only mandatory digest algorithm. There's currently no option in the smime utility (which isn't designed to be a full blown S/MIME mail client anyway) also the limited MIME generator has no support for anything other than SHA1.
