I'm looking for an open source method (read free) so that I can have an encrypted file system. The requirement is to never have clear text files on the hard drive at any time. Users will be uploading the files to Apache using a PHP program. My searching has only found Rhea's paper from 1999 which required a kernel patch. So my questions are, is there a solution not requiring a kernel patch? If not, will the procedure he used work with a 2.4 kernel? Any help in the right direction would be appreciated.
