um, perhaps if you configure "no-asm -ggdb3"?? Otherwise I can only assume
you're getting 30 ops/sec because someone is running timing attacks on the
same machine you're running "speed" :-)

I have a 1Ghz AMD that is in the ballpark of the speeds you mention.
