Perhaps the higher-level BIO api is what you are looking for. Look at the
examples at (http://www.openssl.org/docs/crypto/BIO_s_accept.html#)
and(http://www.openssl.org/docs/crypto/BIO_s_connect.html#) and see if it is
what you want.
