rachel> Does anyone know what the different between "OpenSSL 0.9.6b"
rachel> and "OpenSSL 0.9.6b - engine"?

Yes. The "engine" variant has extra support for external crypto
devices like hardware crypto devices. The support is limited to RSA,
DSA, DH and RAND operations, however. In 0.9.7 (not yet released),
the support has now been extended to symmetric crypto as well, as well
as having engines in separate shared object libraries and so on.
