OpenSLL Folks,

I am using OpenSSL 0.9.6 24 Sep 2000 and
issued the following:

openssl ca -policy policy_match -days 365 -md md5 -out ./SRVcert.pem -keyfile
./CAkey.pem -cert ./CAcert.pem \
>-outdir . -infiles ./SRVreq.pem

And saw:

Using configuration from /usr/local/ssl/openssl.cnf
Enter PEM pass phrase:
unable to load number from /usr/local/ssl/certs/mycerts/serial
error while loading serial number
13252:error:0D065085:asn1 encoding routines:a2i_ASN1_INTEGER:short line:f_int.c:210:

I touched both /usr/local/ssl/certs/mycerts/index.txt and serial
as seen below:

drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 13 08:35 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Aug 10 13:06 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1419 Aug 10 13:10 CAcert.pem
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 951 Aug 10 13:10 CAkey.pem
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Aug 10 13:46 index.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Aug 13 08:35 serial
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Aug 13 08:47 SRVcert.pem
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 887 Aug 10 13:13 SRVkey.pem
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 818 Aug 10 13:13 SRVreq.pem

>From what I've read, index.txt is used to store certificate databases
and serial is for serial number of certificates issue by me.

How are are serial number generated and now are they stored in the
file "serial" ?

Thanks

 Did you know...

TOP 10 USELESS FACTS FOR THE WEEK

1 - Roosters do NOT crow at the sun. Hens are scratching for bugs at
sunrise and the rooster is letting them and all the others know they are
his chickens, in his territory.

2 - The fighting men of ancient Greece wore only one sandal, on the left
foot, for kicking purposes. Thus, the military evolved to start
ceremonies on the combat foot. It was also considered bad manners at a
friend's house to step on his threshold with your left foot.

3 - Frogs cannot swallow with their eyes open. Additionally, the frog's
tongue is attached to the front of its mouth.

4 - Killer whales are not whales. They are dolphins who generally prey
on seals.

5 - "Moonbows" coincide with a full moon and are the result of light
refracting through water droplets in the atmosphere. If the water vapor
is in the right place and if the sky is clear, a bright full moon acts
like the sun and creates a rainbow at night. The rainbow may appear
black because there is no sky to view it against. The clear skies and
moist air of the Hawaiian Islands make this location one of the few places
where a "moonbow" can be seen.

6 - Glaciers are NOT found ONLY in colder climates. Mount Kenya (17,057
feet), located near the equator, is topped with snow and glaciers. The
name Kenya is from "kerenyaga", meaning "mountain of whiteness".

7 - The highest tides in the world are at the Bay of Fundy, which
separates New Brunswick from Nova Scotia. At some times of the year the
difference between high and low tide is 53 feet 6 inches, the equivalent
of a three-story building.

8 - Samuel Clemens was not the first Mark Twain. A Mississippi river
boat captain had used the name first, but Clemens made it famous.

9 - Not all flies fly. The 'sheep ked' spends its entire life in the
fleece of sheep.

10 - Ducks are never male. The males of the species are drakes.
