This seems to only happen on certain Linux distributions and no one that
can reproduce this has so far given any additional info. Unfortunately
the way libsafe works is to SIGKILL the errant application which means
it would have to be modified to get any useful information from a
debugger.

It might be an OpenSSL problem or it might just trigger a bug in certain
library versions. What are the versions of the various libraries OpenSSL
is linked against?
