I have just downloaded stunnel-3.8p4 and performed a quick
  CC=cc CFLAGS="-Ae -O +DAportable" /.configure
  make
and it created a working stunnel executable without problems.
(It then failed creating stunnel.so with GNU-C flags, but this is another
story and not needed to simply run stunnel).
Hence, the original poster should kindly re-check is configuration.
