If you look under "Contributed" on the OpenSSL web site you will
find a package of scripts:

        http://www.openssl.org/contrib/ssl.ca-0.1.tar.gz

Those scripts can create CA keys and certificate requests and
sign certificate requests to generate certificates.

You can also look at the OpenCA project <http://www.openca.org>
for some more examples for generating, signing, and converting
certificates, keys, and certifying authorities.

Examples of working code are far better than trying to explain it.
