How to write a client to let the SSL_get_peer_certificate call on server side return a X509 point

Hi:
    Do you know how to write a client program with certification? I don't
know how to setup my client program to use a pem file and let the server
side get the certification.
    In one words, how to write a client program to let the
SSL_get_peer_certificate() function call on server side not return NULL but
a X509 point.
