Take a look at M2Crypto, http://www.post1.com/home/ngps/m2
M2Crypto is a Python-OpenSSL interface. It does both server-
and client-side certificates; the current 0.04 snapshot has Python
callbacks for cert verification.
It is on OpenSSL 0.9.4. I'll integrate it will 0.9.5 as soon as
I can download that. Right now, www.openssl.org seems to be down. ;-)
