As a programmer using OpenSSL, I have to say that this statement is false.
Certainly, I have the experience to read the OpenSSL source code and
understand what it is doing...and indeed, I have been doing this, because
the documentation on how to use the APIs is really very poor.

Documentation is ALWAYS a good thing.

I note that I, like the original sender, don't want to sound ungrateful
about this -- I'm delighted that OpenSSL exists. But the poor documentation
is a barrier to using it, and saying that it isn't is not the right
response.

Actually, gcc has quite good documentation.
