Although much of the info is now out-of-date, the stuff about being your
own CA at http://www.intertrader.com is still useful.  Can't remember
the full URL, but follow links to "Library", SSL, and then a link to a
faq on SSLeay without patent problems.  The second half of that page 
contains details about being your own CA without using CA.sh.
