I can confirm the 2623 (Chromium 49) branch builds fine at least with Ubuntu 14.04 as 32 and 64 bit. the 32 bit executable is Debian Wheezy compatible, the x64 not. i have to try to rebuild that on Wheezy x64 and then go for Windows.
Regarding VLC: Note that the project Viewer LL made already uses VLC for Linux.
