Something similar happened to me last night, and I doubt it was overheating. Mesh Viewer.
Bizarro graphics and then a total OS X lock up. Had to finally cycle power. next try, similar, but before the lockup I got into preferences and changed graphics from High to Med. After that, things worked ok. if it happens again, I will try to get better data.
