That document has been recently (pre-viewer-development and hg) updated by me, including adding all the caveats that exist for building standalone.
Which part does give you problems? Building on standalone never was easy-- in fact, before my update it was impossible without being guided personally by some guru on IRC. I think it was improved GREATLY though and if you are still not able to compile it then that is certainly not caused by the document being out of date as you seem to suggest (and which you could have seen in the history of it).
