Just a shot in the dark.  Do you have Openoffice 3.1 installed (from Opensolaris IPS)?  
If yes, that may be your problem.  The release candidates install in the same location, 
/opt/openoffice.org & /opt/openoffice.org3.  Remove the old 3.1 installation first. 
 Also, I have installed successfully the development releases along side the released 
and release candidate install because it goes int /opt/ooo-dev & /opt/ooo-dev3.
