I have compiled smartmontools-5.38 from the sourceforge tarball (./configure followed by make) and all seems well. However when I attempt to:
smartctl -d scsi -H /dev/rdsk/c5d1 "-H" doesn't matter, any operation results in: " smartctl version 5.38 [i386-pc-solaris2.11] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ Standard Inquiry (36 bytes) failed [Inappropriate ioctl for device] Retrying with a 64 byte Standard Inquiry Standard Inquiry (64 bytes) failed [Inappropriate ioctl for device] A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options. " Adding "-T permissive" doesn't do anything: " #smartctl -d scsi -T permissive /dev/rdsk/c5d1 smartctl version 5.38 [i386-pc-solaris2.11] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ Standard Inquiry (36 bytes) failed [Inappropriate ioctl for device] Retrying with a 64 byte Standard Inquiry Standard Inquiry (64 bytes) failed [Inappropriate ioctl for device] " System is pretty vanilla Intel Desktop motherboard and CPU. prtdiag: " System Configuration: BIOS Configuration: Intel Corp. Discovery just results in the expected not ATA errors. Anyone got any idea why this isn't working? (Sysdef and other info on request.) All 6 drives arer working fine 2 as rpool mirrored, and 4 as raid z1.
