I have compiled smartmontools-5.38 from the sourceforge tarball (./configure
followed by make) and all seems well. However when I attempt to:

smartctl -d scsi -H /dev/rdsk/c5d1

"-H" doesn't matter, any operation results in:

"
smartctl version 5.38 [i386-pc-solaris2.11] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Standard Inquiry (36 bytes) failed [Inappropriate ioctl for device]
Retrying with a 64 byte Standard Inquiry
Standard Inquiry (64 bytes) failed [Inappropriate ioctl for device]
A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T
permissive' options.
"

Adding "-T permissive" doesn't do anything:

"
#smartctl -d scsi -T permissive /dev/rdsk/c5d1

System is pretty vanilla Intel Desktop motherboard and CPU. prtdiag:

Drives are all on the internal SATA ports.

Discovery just results in the expected not ATA errors.

Anyone got any idea why this isn't working? (Sysdef and other info on request.)
All 6 drives arer working fine 2 as rpool mirrored, and 4 as raid z1.
