I am one of those solaris noobs that post silly questions. Here are my 5cents:

I think you are right, this is not a Solaris helpdesk. Actually I feel a bit
bad on how you solaris developers have devoted your precious time to answer
noob questions, when you should instead make solaris better!

The BIG problem is; I have posted on several Solaris forums, and the help and
answers one gets, are not good at all. For instance, at sun.com solaris forum,
there are many (most) posts that has no reply. That forum is full of questions,
with no answers. But here one gets high qualitative answers, and often
immediately. Which is to be expected, as your knowledge is deepest of all
solaris forums there is.

I often go to linuxquestions.org and post my questions there, as "Jilliagre" is
very knowledgeable and has deep knowledge too. But I dont want to wear him out,
and he is the only one answering all silly questions. And I try to answer posts
too, to ease his burden. "Be a producer, not a consumer".

You know, this forum is going to attract more and more noobs, because it is
here where you get GOOD answers.

Another suggestion (I have been thinking about this problem a while) is that
this forum should be closed for noobs, and only developer/bug questions are
accepted here (the noob questions are pointed to sun.com Solaris forum). And
you guys takes turn at sun.com Solaris forum and answer questions there. The
problem is that no knowledgeable guys are there at sun.com. If you could answer
one question each there/day - you could have this forum all by yourself. Or
instead, do this "take turn things" at this forum instead on sun.com. Make sure
the noobs find their home here (put it first, above all other). Whenever a noob
question is posted in other areas, just answer "post this question in the noob
area instead" and ignore it.

Or, just let it be, let it evolve. This way you give noobs a warm welcome and
the uneasiness of getting Solaris help disappears, and the noobs recommends
Solaris to their friends and spreading Solaris. You know, if I hadnt got so
much help with Solaris (I know noone who uses it - Im the first) I would have
quit with Solaris. Now as I am learning more (heh) I try to help other people
too. I dont want to be a burden. I want to contribute.

If you are too harsh to noobs, they wont try Solaris and leave it be.
