I don't know where you get the idea that I'd want a world "where software is 
bound behind lock and key", because I don't.

I want a platform that "just works", doesn't use the personal computer 
computing model, AND is still highly extensible and customizable should anyone 
ever desire to do so.

It would seem that even among the more savvy computer users, there is still 
this mentality that computing just has to be one or the other.

Well it doesn't, and I would have never wanted it to. A computing model such as 
you've described would just plain simple suck dead bunnies through a bent straw 
sideways.

What does this all have to do with (Open)Solaris? It's THE OS positioned to 
offer both - "just works" and open enough to customize / extend should someone 
so wish it - with a solid foundation to do so.

I want scalable solutions, that are capable of doing both, not just one or the 
other. It's always been that way with me.
