I don't know where you get the idea that I'd want a world "where software is bound behind lock and key", because I don't. I want a platform that "just works", doesn't use the personal computer computing model, AND is still highly extensible and customizable should anyone ever desire to do so. It would seem that even among the more savvy computer users, there is still this mentality that computing just has to be one or the other. Well it doesn't, and I would have never wanted it to. A computing model such as you've described would just plain simple suck dead bunnies through a bent straw sideways. What does this all have to do with (Open)Solaris? It's THE OS positioned to offer both - "just works" and open enough to customize / extend should someone so wish it - with a solid foundation to do so. I want scalable solutions, that are capable of doing both, not just one or the other. It's always been that way with me.
