Ah, interesting. Using your example with reading from the raw disk device, I get similar numbers actually. I have tried tweaking recordsize to a lower value if that might help in the case of many smaller files. My setup is:
Asus M2NPV-VM Motherboard 2 Seagate ES 250Gb SATA disks 512MB DDR-II RAM AMD Sempron 3400+ The sluggish performance came when I was trying nfs over zfs when backing up a home directory with many small files, so possibly this affected performance as well. Having not used compression on filesystems before, I didn't reflect on the discrepancy between disk usage and file sizes. Well well, you always learn something. I'll have another look at the iozone statistics to see if there's something strange there.
