What gnu stuff do we need?

Usability improvements that linux has had? Which ones?
I looked after over 30 Linux boxes in my previous job
besides sharing responsibility for more with others
and I wonder what usability improvements Linux has
over Solaris since I am new to Solaris and I do not
see much improvement in Linux over Solaris.
