Project Proposal: Multi-lingual Technology Glossary

I propose a project on OpenSolaris.org for the development of multilingual
technology glossary. By glossary, I mean a collection of terms and the
definitions. IMHO, this project brings several advantages to the success of
OS.o community.

A good glossary makes an excellent reference material for professors and
students at the academic institutions around the world that are just beginning
to adopt OpenSolaris. It's equally useful to users who want to quickly look up
a technology term and learn what it means and does. While translating a
documentation and a whole operating system may feel and is a time and labor
intensive task, creating a glossary can progress rather quickly and be more
easily managed and maintained. Especially for users where Solaris is not
localized into their languages, having a comprehensive list of terms and
definitions (as opposed to nothing) in their languages lowers barrier for them
to explore Solaris. To all who cares to learn about Solaris, this project
provides a contribution opportunity to develop such a glossary.

Current idea is to start with an existing glossary and translate it into as
many languages as possible. Over time, we can add more terms and definitions to
it. And to dream big for a moment, I envision that certain terms will start
having FAQs, examples, screen captures, ... and it will develop to a kind of
technology encyclopedia. Now wouldn't that be cool?! ;-)

Documentation Community has a glossary (Sun Global Glossary):
http://opensolaris.org/os/community/documentation/doc_collab/glossary/ which is
a collection of nearly 2000 technical terms and definitions. Sun tech writers
have ensured the quality of this glossary and are continuiing to add more
content to it. Many of these terms have been translated in the past, so Sun
G11n can contribute existing translations of those terms and the rest of the
glossary content on the MediaWiki (Wiktionary) software.

There are more details that we need to discuss which can take place in existing
i18n community alias (i18n-discuss) and IRC (#opensolaris-i18n) until we need
separate ones. As for now, I'm looking for seconds and endorsements, possibly
by leaders of the Education and/or Documentation communities.

Anyone? :-)

Thank you for your time.
Young
