Project Proposal: Device Detection Tool I propose a project on opensolaris.org for the creation of Device Detection Tool. This tool is a handy tool to check devices against a database. It provides a web-accessible method for Linux, Windows and Solaris users to check their device driver availability on Solaris system.
Device Detection Tool collects device information from a user's machine; analyzes the information to extract which devices users have; compares with its Database to determine the driver status of each certain device. Finally, this tool sorts and lists all devices and the corresponding driver status, which tells users whether Sun Microsystems or some third part vendors provide driver for those devices on Solaris system. This tool helps users make sure whether their devices are supported by Solaris system. For Linux and Windows users, this tool contributes to convince them to adopt Solaris system. As to those Solaris users who are confused by discovering some out of gear devices, Device Detection Tool can help them find out whether they need new drivers, or the devices are not supported by Solaris OS. Currently, this tool has been released. Its web page is available at http://bigadmin.eng.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.html. Although it's released, Device Detection Tool is only a limit-scope device driver detection tool. I hope it could become more valuable based on the current idea. I'm seeking seconds for the proposal, community participation in the project, and an endorsement from the leaders of Device Driver Community. I'd like to tie the project as closely to that community as possible. So, for now, all we need is a project space to publish source code and design document. That's it Thanks and Best Regards Li Ye _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
