If Sun did supply Solaris with an apropriate /etc/default/cdrecord
cdrecord would win over cdrw as it is easier to use.

BTW: the alias to the "first CD writer" comes from vold and is recognized by 
cdrecord.

So if people from Sun really prefer to "default to the 'first CD writer' found",
Sun would only need to add "CDR_DEVICE=cdrom" to /etc/default/cdrecord.
If people claim that cdrecord is harder to use than cdrw, they should not 
bother against me but bother against the people at Sun who did create the 
current setup for cdrecord on Solaris....
