Thinking about it more, do you want the Solaris Desktop to be just another "me too" desktop, just a GUI with all of the same modules every one else has? I would think that you might want to differentiate it more, integrating with something like the Looking Glass project. I realize that I trivialize the porting process a bit, so no flames please, and a lot of times it's not as easy as it looks, but for the most part, the basic coding is already done.

People in this community live "on the edge", most of us being developers. Would it be possible to use this as a platform to experiment with alternatives, instead of the same thing?

My $.02 ...

The problem with making GNOME the project is that it is just one of many projects which must come together in order to create a unified opensolaris desktop. I think Glynn's idea could really help connect opensolaris desktop users and developers with maintainers of the components, but I wonder if we shouldn't try to pull a couple more components under this project umbrella. Alan mentioned the projects which comprise JDS, but I'd add that the Xserver, hardware support (drivers), installer and package/patch mechanism are also important for the desktop experience.

sounds like a great idea, but be careful. There are many other desktops,
which JDS clearly has to catch up to. Would it make more sense to make
gnome the OS project?

Subject: [desktop-discuss] Project Proposal :: JDS

Hey,

I'd like to propose that the Java Desktop System, JDS, be an official
OpenSolaris project.

Why?
====
  o Infrastructure like the creation of mailing lists or source code
    repositories require it to be a 'Project'.

  o With the introduction of projects like GNOME SSA, there is now
    more confusion. I suspect it will get worse rather than better.

  o Currently JDS is a 'sub-community' underneath the Desktop
    community. While not conceptually wrong, 'Project' might be a
    better fit [especially if we ever do a mass cull of communities
    and move them to projects].

How?
====
  o I'd like to shift over the current set of web pages and add a
    set of re-directs to the current pages.
  o I'm still hesitant to create a standalone JDS mailing list, and
    will continue to advocate using desktop-discuss.
  o The Desktop community content will then be changed to reflect the
    various upstream communities that the code originates from, how
    people can contribute to them directly, and the types of projects
    we undertake while under the Desktop community umbrella.

Comments welcome.
